Student Interns

Find out the J-1 visa requirements needed to intern in the United States for under 12 months. Learn US culture and business practices in your chosen field.


  • Minimum Duration: 3 weeks
  • Maximum Duration: 12 Months

Student Intern Eligibility

  1. Must be enrolled in and pursuing a degree at an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S.
  2. The internship must fulfill the educational objectives for their current degree program at his or her home institution
  3. Must have verifiable English language skills sufficient to function on a day-to-day basis in the internship environment
  4. Must be in the United States to engage in a student internship program rather than to engage in employment
  5. Must be accepted into a student internship program at the postsecondary accredited academic institution
  6. Must be “in good academic standing” at his or her home institution outside the United States
  7. Must return to academic program outside the United States and fulfill and obtain a degree after completion of the program.
  8. Must have sufficient finances for their entire stay in the United States, including housing and living expenses

Program Requirements

  1. The internship must be full-time; i.e., consist of a minimum of 32 hours per week. 
  2. The internship must fulfill the educational objectives for the current degree program at his or her home institution
  3. All tasks assigned must be necessary for the completion of the student internship program.
  4. The internship tasks may consist of no more than 20% clerical work. 
  5. The internship must expose the participant to:
    • American techniques, methodologies, and technology
    • Expand upon the participant’s existing knowledge and skills
    • Not duplicate the student intern’s prior experience
  6. Internships cannot place a student intern in any position that involves the following: unskilled or casual labor, childcare or eldercare, aviation, clinical positions or engaging in any other kind of work that involves patient care or contact, any position, occupation, or business that could bring the exchange visitor program or the department into notoriety or disrepute.

What Should be Submitted by the Academic Institution

  1. Letter of Acceptance or Invitation from Supporting Department. This letter must:
    • Be on official University letterhead
    • Signed by the department head
    • Include student name, start and completion date, description of program, purpose and major area of study.
  1. English Proficiency Report signed by an appropriate academic representative indicating adequate English language skills to enable the student to successfully participate in the program and function independently in the community.

What Should be Submitted by the Applicant

  1. Request for SEVIS DS-2019
  2. Affidavit of Support
  3. Supporting financial documentation: 
    • An official bank statement in English attesting to the funds available for financial sponsor listed on the affidavit of support
    • Letter from an academic sponsor indicating financial support
  1. Affidavit of support and financial documentation for all dependents, if applicable 
  2. Copy of the exchange visitor’s passport identification page
  3. Signed insurance guarantee (PDF) and proof of sufficient insurance as per federal regulations.

Insurance Coverage Requirements

Proper insurance is required of each exchange visitor and all accompanying spouses and dependents covering sickness or accidents during the time of their exchange visitor program.
