Reduced Course Load Information

As an international student, maintenance of status is dependent on enrollment in a full course of study.

  • English Language Training: 18 Clock hours
  • EAP/AAP Pathway Program: 9.5 Contact Hours/11 Credits
  • MAP/AMAP Program: 12.5 Contact Hours/9 Credit Hours
  • Undergraduate Students: 12 Credits
  • Graduate Students: 9 Credits

Students wishing to enroll in less than a full course of study must meet the appropriate requirements and be authorized by International Services prior to the drop below a full course of study.

  1. Meet all requirements and provide all requested documents prior to the drop below a full course of study.
  2. A reduced course load must consist of at least six credits, or half the clock hours required for a full course of study.
  3. A student who drops below a full course of study without the prior approval of the DSO will be considered out of status.
  4. Approval from the Academic Department.
  5. Authorization from International Services.
  6. Completion of  the request to reduce the full course of study requirement for the identified semester.

If the student does not gain authorization from International Services prior to the drop below a full course of study, the student will be considered out of status.

  • A student may be authorized to reduce course load for a reason of illness or medical condition on more than one occasion while pursuing a course of study, so long as the aggregate period of that authorization does not exceed 12 months.

To Complete Course of Study in Current Term

The designated school official, located in International Services may allow an F-1 student to engage in less than a full course of study in order to complete your academic program during the requested current term. If you are not required to take any additional courses to satisfy the requirements for completion, but continue to be enrolled for administrative purposes, you will not be eligible for a reduced course load, considered to have completed your course of study and must take action to maintain status. Such action may include application for change of status or departure from the U.S.  If the student drops below a full course of study without the prior approval of the DSO and an authorized reduced course load, the student will be considered out of status.
